Diet and exercise play a key role in the treatment of individuals suffering from diabetes. To achieve optimum effects, it is advised that diabetics eat right and exercise properly. To eat right implies reduction if not total avoidance of foods rich in saturated fat and sugar while incorporating more monounsaturated and polyunsaturated sources of fat in the diet.

The following are some tips to cut down on saturated fat consumption:

  • Eat only meats, minus the unwanted fats.
  • Switch to more fish and poultry.
  • Eat less amount of butter.
  • Consume skimmed milk or milk that is low in fat.
  • Eat no more than three to four eggs a week.
  • Avoid if not entirely eliminate foods that are full of saturated fat such as sausages, hamburgers, fries, etc.

Experts suggest that for a diabetic patient it is safe to remove around 500 calories on a typical meal per day. The ideal ratio should be 50% to 55% carbohydrates, 30% fat and 10% to 15% protein.

Regular exercise is associated with decreased blood sugar levels

Among diabetics and those who are in the “pre-diabetic” stage, doing exercise has been documented to not only aid in loss of weight but also help decrease blood sugar levels and more significantly enhance the action of insulin in the body. A 20 to 30 minute exercise done thrice a week triggers a considerable raise in the number of insulin receptors which translate to long-term decrease in levels of blood glucose. Overall, exercise impacts diabetics by way of bringing their blood sugar nearer to normal, making them less dependent on oral medication and insulin injections and permitting them to lose weight.
