Use Your Brain More to Burn More Fats

Published:March 6th, 2011

Do you ever wonder why excessive thinking can be so exhausting? Do you know why having so much problems is not only mentally draining but also physically tiring as well?

According to an article published online by The Franklin Institute, your brain eats up twice as much energy than any other cells within your body. Your brain cells are always in the active phase of metabolic activity. They never rest, even when you are resting and sleeping. These brain cells’ communication requires loads and loads of energy.  And during your sleeping time, these cells still need a lot of energy to repair and rebuild their structurally defective and worn-out components.

Do you know why brain cells require so much energy in their communication to each other and in their function? The brain cells communicate with each other through electric signals. And this electric transmission needs about a half of the total daily energy requirement of the brain – that is about ten percent of the body’s total daily energy expenditure! All in all, the brain needs 20% of the total daily energy requirement of the body – that is around 500 calories out of a total 2500 calorie intake you have per day. But during intense mental exercise, the brain can take up much more energy. Think of it, it only weighs less than two percent of the body’s total weight! Amazing, isn’t it?

What form of energy does the brain need?

The brain eats up sugar within the blood. But in times of fasting, it readily gobbles up ketones, the product of fat metabolism.

What can my brain do in my weight loss efforts?

Since the brain can eat so much energy within a day, why not take the opportunity and make it exercise more? Try to learn new things everyday through reading. Increase your mental powers.  Feeling hungry after this activity? Hey don’t eat right away. Let your body shift your brain’s energy supply from sugar in your blood to ketones from your fat stores. This way, you will burn more fats!

If you want to burn more energy and fats, being idle all the time can never make you accomplish anything. Try to find activities that can make your bulges melt away. Through mental exercises and learning through reading, you will not only increase your knowledge and improve your intelligence. You will also be able to get rid of those excess weight of yours. And so, want to lose more weight? Start using your brain more.
