Raw food diet is one of the very popular diets that are followed by a lot of people these days. This diet typically involves eating raw fruits and vegetables. That’s why most people who follow this kind of diet are vegan. Some consume raw cheese and eggs made from raw milk. Science has now proved that cooking destroys various nutrients and enzymes needed by our body. That is why raw food diet is recommended by its followers. But, of course, whether the suitability of this diet on a case-to-case basis.

Raw foodists prepare their meals differently for they do not use traditional ovens and stoves. Preparing their meals involve the use of food dehydrators and soaking and sprouting vegetables such as raw beans and legumes, and dehydrating. One research showed that the participants who ate a raw food diet during the study were deficient in Vitamin B which is vital for nerve and blood cell development. In contrast to this study, another study showed that the participants had normal levels of Vitamin A, a vitamin that is abundant in vegetables, the staple food of raw foodists.

Advantages of raw food diet

Some researchers are of the opinion that following this type of diet plan is somehow beneficial. People who eat raw food are believed to have increased energy and clear skin; they lose weight and have a reduced risk for acquiring various diseases. Also, a person’s digestive process improves when he engages in this type of diet.

Disadvantages of raw food diet

There are nutrients that need to be cooked for them to be absorbed by the body. And when a person takes in raw food a hundred percent, then, certain nutrients that need to be cooked first to be absorbed will not be absorbed. Eating excess raw food can result in detoxification effects, such as queasiness, headache, and craving for rich food.

Following this kind of diet plan is not easy and it is not advisable for infants and children. Those who are anemic and pregnant are also not advised to follow the raw food diet. As stated earlier, each diet has its own good and bad points. In this case, raw foodists should make sure that they are getting enough nutrients that are lacking in plant based foods such as calcium and iron. That is why American Dietetic Association advises raw foodists to take supplements.

The raw food diet is very flexible. It is up to you how you follow this diet plan. But remember, everything must be done step by step. Do not change your diet abruptly. Do everything gradually. And as time will go by, your body will get used to eating raw although not completely and you will be able to enjoy its nutritional benefits.
