What is mindful eating?

Since a major contributing factor to obesity is overeating, it is important that the bad habit be controlled through an exercise called as mindful eating. Mindful eating is the practice of making youself aware of the nourishing qualities of the food being eaten. This is perhaps one of the most effective tools to loose weight.

How is it practiced?

This is done step by step. First, you will have to focus on the food that you are eating. Therefore, when you are eating, you will not engage in other activities such as reading, chatting, talking and many others. As you focus your attention to the food that you are eating, notice its appearance such as its enticing colors. Then pick up the food that you want to eat and notice its looks and smell. Note the texture of the food, whether it is soft, smooth and crunchy. Chew the food slowly in your mouth. Notice its taste as its juice touches the taste buds in your tongue. With each bite that you swallow, notice how your hunger slowly disappears and how each swallow affects you. Continue to eat the food slowly, bite by bite. When your body tells you that you are not hungry anymore, then you will need to end what you are eating. With this, you can control the amount of food that goes in to your system.

What are the effects of mindful eating?

When you have already acquired the principles of mindful eating, you will see a change in yourself and the way you look at eating. One of these changes is that you acknowledge the fact that each individual has his/her own unique eating experiences as no two individuals are similar. You will also reflect that unmindful eating causes no good to a person and thus needs to be stopped. In addition, you will also become aware of the connection between earth, human beings, cultural exercises and how your intake of food affects those systems.
