Prevalence of Obesity in the United Kingdom Armed Forces Highest in the More-than-35 years Age Group

Published:February 23rd, 2011

A recent survey published in January 2011 by the Military medicine states that the more-than-35 years old age group has the highest prevalence rate of obesity in the United Kingdom Armed Forces.

In this study, the height and weight values of the members of the United Kingdom Armed Forces were recorded and analyzed. The researchers found that among the members of the Armed Forces, 6.2% of male members under 25 years of age are obese, 24.5% of the 35- year-old military males have this weight problem. In women, the prevalence of obesity was 12% in the under-25-years-old age group and 25% in those over 35 years old were also obese. Furthermore, self-reporting revealed that those that belong to the obese group do not perceive themselves to have this weight problem.

Thus, the researchers concluded that the prevalence of obesity in the United Kingdom Armed Forces is still low and that most of these obese subjects do not have any idea that they are already having this metabolic problem within themselves.
