FDA Gives a Thumbs Up for Diet Pill Contrave

Published:December 22nd, 2010

The expert advisory panel of the FDA gave an approval for the use of Contrave, the newest diet pill medication that promises effective weight loss results.

The panelists of FDA expressed their concerns about the potential increases in blood pressure and possible stroke consequences of this medication.  However, they agreed that further studies can be done after Contrave is approved for public use.

Contrave is manufactured by Orexigen Therapeutics Incorporated.  According to a study funded by its manufacturer, Contrave is a good and effective adjuvant therapy for weight loss when coupled with proper diet and exercise. It is a combination drug composed of naltrexone, a drug used to fight addiction, and bupropion, an antidepressant medication. The researchers have hypothesized that this new drug combination becomes an effective weight loss medication because of its centrally acting mechanism.
