Calcium and Vitamin D: Vitamins for Increased Metabolism?

Published:March 15th, 2011

Do you know that some vitamins may enhance your metabolism? Yes, they truly can! According to a recent study conducted in Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute, Curtin University of Technology, Australia and published in the January 2011 issue of Clinical Nutrition, calcium and vitamin D may increase a person’s metabolism.

In this study eleven adult subjects were recruited and randomly assigned to a low calcium diet and high calcium diet. Diet induced rate of metabolism, fat oxidation level and feeling of satiety were then evaluated and recorded for a period of eight hours.

The results? High calcium and vitamin D in the diet resulted in in increased diet induced rate of metabolism and fat oxidation compared to the control groups. Furthermore, this type of diet also induced greater satiety which resulted in lower energy intake.

Thus, if you are planning to lose weight by increasing your body’s metabolism, one of the ways you can do this is to have a high calcium and vitamin D-enriched diet. This way, you will have greater rate of energy burning and lesser appetite.
